Fredrik Heintz is Professor of Computer Science at Linköping University, where he leads the Reasoning and Learning Lab and heads the Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems. He works on trustworthy AI and autonomous systems, directs the national RESIST centre for cyber-resilient AI, and sits on the EU AI Act Scientific Panel.

Fredrik Heintz is Professor of Computer Science at Linköping University. His research combines machine learning with knowledge representation and reasoning, focusing on trustworthy AI, autonomous systems and stream reasoning.

He founded and leads the Reasoning and Learning (ReaL) Lab and heads the Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS). He directs the AI4X Centre of Excellence and the national SSF research centres RESIST and CHASS, is co-director of WASP — Sweden’s largest research programme — and coordinates the EU TrustLLM project.

He serves on the EU AI Act Scientific Panel and is Vice President for AI Research at Adra. He was a member of the Swedish AI Commission, which delivered its national roadmap in 2024, and is a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He is one of Sweden’s most prominent voices on AI in media.

Fredrik Heintz is Professor of Computer Science at Linköping University, where he founded and leads the Reasoning and Learning (ReaL) Lab and heads the Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS).

His research addresses what it takes to build AI systems that can be relied on where failure is expensive — in healthcare, transport, public safety and critical infrastructure. The work combines machine learning with knowledge representation and reasoning: systems that learn from data, reason with what they know, and work alongside people and other machines. Core themes include trustworthy AI, autonomous systems, fairness and explainability, and stream reasoning.

Much of his work concerns scaling and accelerating AI research and education — building the programmes and institutions that turn individual results into national and European capability. He directs the AI4X Centre of Excellence and the national SSF research centres RESIST, on cyber-resilient AI, and CHASS. He is co-director of WASP, Sweden’s largest individual research investment in modern times, and previously directed its Graduate School. He coordinates the EU TrustLLM project, developing a trustworthy open language model for European languages, and previously coordinated TAILOR, the European network of AI research excellence centres.

He serves on the EU AI Act Scientific Panel and is Vice President for AI Research at Adra. He was a member of the Swedish AI Commission, which delivered its roadmap for Sweden in 2024, and of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on AI, which produced the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI. He is a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), a past President of the Swedish AI Society, and has been recognised with Linköping University’s prize for outstanding teaching.

Han är föreståndare för spetsforskningscentrumet AI4X och för de nationella SSF-centrumen RESIST, om cyberresilient AI, och CHASS. Han är biträdande programdirektör för WASP, Sveriges största enskilda forskningssatsning i modern tid, och var tidigare föreståndare för dess forskarskola. Han koordinerar EU-projektet TrustLLM, som utvecklar en tillförlitlig och öppen språkmodell för europeiska språk, och koordinerade tidigare TAILOR, det europeiska nätverket av spetsforskningscentrum inom AI.

Han är ledamot i EU:s vetenskapliga panel för AI-förordningen och Vice President for AI Research vid Adra. Han var ledamot i AI-kommissionen, som 2024 överlämnade sin färdplan för Sverige, och i EU-kommissionens högnivåexpertgrupp för AI, som tog fram Etiska riktlinjer för tillförlitlig AI. Han är ledamot av Kungl. Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien (IVA), tidigare ordförande i Svenska AI-sällskapet och har tilldelats Linköpings universitets pris för framstående insatser inom utbildning.
